Prabal (rhymes with ‘trouble’) Gurung is an up-and-coming New York designer with an extraordinary world view. Born in Singapore, he was raised in Nepal, and trained in New Delhi, Melbourne and London before becoming the design director at Bill Blass in 2004. His eponymous collection launched in 2009 and was quickly adopted by fashion forward fans including Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Zoe Saldana and Demi Moore. He credits his Nepalese upbringing with a very unusual perspective on the fashion business. “Success is a karmic test,” he said when we met up with him at Neiman Marcus, where he was introduced in a trunk show and brunch hosted by Jenna Liddell. “You can enjoy it and be aware of it, but you need to take and do something better with it. I struggle every day to stay grounded.” Which he did, even as San Francisco’s fashionistas cooed over his demure demeanor and delightful designs. New found fans included Sobia Shaikh, Justin Fichelson, Marcy Carmack, Melissa Barbour, Andrea Schnitzer, Barbara Brown, newly engaged Stephanie Roumelioties, and a bevy of beauties who recognize that a Neiman’s charge card really can get a girl into Prabal trouble.
