When pure light descends on a body of water, such as sunlight, it brings into existence the color blue. This past Saturday, August 2nd, 2014 Lake Tahoe was Ultra Blue, as a result of the collaboration between Saks Fifth Avenue and Oscar de la Renta. They introduced their 45th annual luncheon and fashion show starring the designer’s 2015 Resort Collection, to benefit The League to Save Lake Tahoe. Since 1969, the highly anticipated annual event, has been held in private estates along the city’s shoreline. Now, the exclusive affair, is held at the Schumacher family home which is firmly-settled on 5 acres of breathtaking lakefront grounds, in the Incline Village of North Lake Tahoe.
“Saks is very honored to continue the annual tradition,” stated Robert Arnold-Kraft, VP and General Manager, Saks Fifth Avenue San Francisco.
In 1995, designer Bill Blass announced his retirement from the world of fashion and would no longer show his collections for the lake’s benefit. Blass convinced his friend to take over the reigns and thus the Oscar de la Renta era began.
“I look forward to this event all year, and I enjoy every moment of the extraordinary setting,” expressed the onetime protégé of Cristóbal Balenciaga.
With the illustrious sapphire blue aqua as the event’s backdrop, the day commenced. Even before the show started, there was palpable excitement in the air. The cocktail hour launched the occasion with spirits donated by Tahoe Blue Vodka, beers by Blue Moon Brewing Co. and wines by Nellcôte. Soon after, lunch began (generously provided by BVLGARI through Roundabout Catering), followed by the live auction. The bidding portion was highly competitive due to the coveted New York Fashion Week ticket with Señor de la Renta himself. The fashion show did not disappoint. True to form, Mr. de la Renta delivered 64 vivid-ensembles, which were met with thunderous applause. His use of color and ongoing ability to highlight-enhance the feminine physique, spoke to every soul in attendance-regardless of gender. After the show, he graciously spoke to the generous supporters (while posing for countless pictures) all in support of, ” This beautiful lake.” Thanks to the 600+ devotees, the event raised $780,000.00—a record!
“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things in nature have a message you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.” ~Eleanora Duse
